Condom use among unmarried women rises 6-fold in a decade

The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) has revealed that usage of condom in unmarried young girls increasing. Condoms usage has increased from 2% to 12% in women over the last decade (between 15 to 45 years old). It is found that young people, aged 20-24, are more concern about the safety sexual methods.

In India, the contraception rate is about 54 percent, according to the National Family Health Survey. The survey found that the vast majority of married women still comply with the old methods, and only one per cent of the women are pursuing modern anti-contraceptive methods like contraceptive pills. The International Family of Population Sciences (IIPS), organized by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) under the Government of India conducted the survey. Survey was conducted four times from 1992 to 2016.

Some of the Survey Highlights 

  • 99% per cent of married women following different kinds of family planning methods. Only 1% of married women are using contraceptive pills.
  • About 34 percent of unmarried women  are following contraceptive methods..
  • For every eight men believe that family planning is the subject belongs to women.
  • Punjab women are in first place who are following contraceptive methods. About of 76% of the population is following family planning methods.
  • Only 24 percent of the women in the states of Manipur, Bihar and Meghalaya are following condom practices.
  • 61% of men believe that pregnancy can be stopped by proper use of condoms.
  • According to the survey, 38 per cent of Muslim women are using condoms as contraceptive method, while 65 per cent of the women from Sikh and Buddha religion are using condoms as contraceptive method..
  • 37 per cent of financial middle class people using condoms and 53 per cent of financial substantial population are using condoms.
  • 59 percent of women are getting awareness about condoms and contraceptive methods via advertisements on TV.
