VIJAYAWADA: Not content with the pace of Polavaram project works, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set new targets for the contractors, sharply increasing the existing excavation volumes. Naidu said contractors and officials must take full advantage of the dry season and expedite works. He made it clear that the government will not persist with the same contractors if the targets are not met.
The chief minister reviewed the Polavaram project works via virtual inspection from his camp office here on Monday. After listening to the presentation given by the representatives of the contractor firms – Transitory and Triveni — and field officials from the project site, Naidu said the speed of works must be stepped up and that there should be no scope for let up.
The chief minister said the contractors and officials must ensure that 1.84 lakh cubic metres of soil excavation are handled each day in the spill channel, which amounts to 55 lakh cubic metres in November. Officials said till date they managed to dig just 30,242 cubic metres each day in the spill channel, and the revised target is an increase of nearly 600 percent. They tried to explain that the latest targets may be hard to reach. However, the CM warned them and said precious time must not be wasted.
